What to Look For in a Scam

There are dozens of clues that should tip you off to a possible scam. Be wary of any of the following activity. While it doesn’t necessary mean you are being scammed, you should be aware of the possibilities of certain problem areas:
Visitation

Many scammers are intent on receiving money from you rather than ever meeting. You should always be wary of a woman who is interested in coming to visit you, asking for money. Never send money to a potential date. If you are wary of the situation, offer to visit her and see how she reacts. A scammer will have no interest in you visiting; they only want your money.

Persistence

Don’t be lulled into false security because you’ve been talking with someone for months. Scammers are patient – it’s why they are successful. Many will wait for months before taking a victim for their money. Use the same safety precautions after five months as you would after five days. This means that you should never, no matter how long you’ve been talking, send someone money online.

Visas and Tickets

Beware of any requests for monetary assistance with Visas or travel tickets. A scammer might claim they need money to visit the local embassy or to obtain the necessary paperwork. You can do all of this on your own, from your end through the appropriate channels. It won’t cost you that much and you’ll know it’s legitimate.

Don’t Succumb to Pressure

A scammer will play on your own insecurities, targeting your desire to be cautious and making you feel bad. Don’t let this pressure get to you. A real woman who isn’t trying to scam you should understand that you would want to be cautious in this situation and would be appropriately patient. Don’t allow them to force you into making poor decisions by playing on your insecurities.

Travel Agency Scams

A very common method of scamming is for the scammer to use a fake travel agency, throwing you off and taking your money. These fake travel agencies are often spottable if you know what to look for. Generally, you should always deal with an agency in your country of origin. Do not allow a scammer to convince you to use an unknown agency in Russia that might not be legitimate.

Payment Methods

If they claim the only way to pay through the travel agency is with cash, you should be immediately wary. Everyone accepts credit cards these days, and if a travel agency for some reason did not, would you honestly want to do business with them?

Credit card payments are easier to track and get your money back from if you are scammed, with the assistance of the banks. Don’t use money transfers or bank wires either, as they are equally hard to trace and retrieve.

Never work with the banks in Latvia for wire transfers. With horrible service and tracking, these banks are world reknowned for their ineptitude, and are not even in Russia, with the woman you’re dealing with.

Simple Tip-Offs

Check their website if they have one. Most respectable travel agencies should have one, along with email addresses and real world addresses. Check all of these and take the extra step to check and ensure the travel agent is properly licensed. These are all aspects scammers often ignore, hoping to prey on the more ignorant folks who would not check to start with. Travel agencies in Russia are required to have a license, something you should be able to check with the proper research. Ensure the agency you’re dealing with is legitimate before ever transferring money.

Background Checking

While it might seem like a big step, background checking is a good idea before you proceed with anything that will cost you money or share your identity. There are services that will ensure the name and address of the woman you’ve been talking with are both real and do records searches to ensure they have not been lying to you about who they are and what they’ve done in the past (including criminal records). While this is a lengthy step that would generally not be necessary with the right woman, you should consider it if you are at all unsure.
